Admissions Policies
Is my child ready for 5-day preschool at Habitat?
It is expected that new students enrollled in our daily
preschool programs show the following five signs of
readiness before she begins preschool at A Children’s
Habitat:
- They do not put nonfood items into their
mouths.
- They are toilet-trained.
- They are able to listen and follow simple
directions.
- They are able to sit for a 10-minute presentation
without disturbing other children.
- They are not aggressive with other
children.
Readiness for the Toddler
Program
All children between the
ages of eighteen months and three years are welcome to
participate in our toddler program.
Readiness for the KG-prep
Program
Children entering their
second year at Habitat with permission from the instructor
are eligible to participate in the KG-prep program.
Readiness for the Two-Day Extended Day
Program
Children entering their
second year at Habitat with permission from the instructor
are eligible to participate in the two-day extended day
program.
Readiness for Kindergarten
Children with two or more years of Montessori experience
and permission of a teacher are eligible for our
kindergarten program.
Choosing between 5-day preschool and the toddler
program?
Two-and-a-half-year-olds and three-year-olds may be placed
in either the toddler program or in a preschool classroom,
depending on their readiness for daily preschool. If you
are interested in enrolling your 2.5 year old in daily
preschool, please contact us to discuss which classroom
environment would be the best fit for your child, and
arrange for a teacher evaluation of your child's readiness.
If you think your child would benefit from a warm-up for
school, we encourage you to schedule a date in the spring
to allow your child to attend a Habitat class for community
time (approximately twenty minutes long). You can contact
the
Recruitment and Enrollment Chairperson
to schedule a date.
May I specify which class my child will be enrolled
in?
When you submit your application, you may request that your
child be assigned to a particular classroom. We do our best
to accommodate your requests but cannot always place your
child in the class of your choice.
Do you require psychological testing?
No. We do not use psychological testing or group interviews
as a part of our admissions procedures. We do not find
psychological testing helpful, and we are aware that
psychological testing and group interviews cause many
children anxiety and distress.
Admission shall be granted without regard to sex, race,
color, creed, religion, national origin, or political
belief.
