Admissions Policies

Is my child ready for Habitat?

It is expected that a new student show the following four signs of
readiness
before she begins preschool at A Children’s Habitat:

  1. She/He does not put nonfood items into her mouth.
  2. She/He is able to listen and follow simple directions.
  3. She/He is able to sit for a 10-minute presentation without disturbing other children.
  4. She/He is not aggressive with other children.

What if my child does not meet one of the readiness requirements?

Before going ahead and sending your child to school, it's a good to meet with your child's future teacher to discuss whether your child is developmentally ready to thrive in a classroom. If your child is under three, or if you have concerns about your child's readiness, we recommend that you contact the Recruitment and Enrollment Chairperson to schedule a date for your child to attend a Habitat class community time (about twenty minutes long).

Readiness for the Extended Day Program

Children entering their second year of Habitat are eligible to participate in the extended day program.

Readiness for Kindergarten

Children with two or more years of Montessori experience and permission of a teacher are eligible for our kindergarten program.

May I specify which class my child will be enrolled in?

When you submit your application, you may request that your child be assigned to a particular classroom. We do our best to accommodate your requests but cannot always place your child in the class of your choice.

Do you require psychological testing?

No. We do not use psychological testing or group interviews as a part of our admissions procedures. We do not find psychological testing helpful, and we are aware that psychological testing and group interviews cause many children anxiety and distress.

Re-enrollment

Re-enrollment to hold a place for the following September begins in mid-February. A nonrefundable application fee must accompany the Re-enrollment
form. A non-refundable deposit equal to one month’s tuition at the
9-month rate is due by March 15 to reserve the space. If the form is
not returned by the specified date, the school will assume that there
is a vacancy to be filled by another child.

Admission shall be granted without regard to sex, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, or political belief.
