Montessori
in the Home
Inspiration to Keep Montessori Alive in Your Home.
Many Montessori parents want to bring the concept of Montessori into their home, and at A Children’s Habitat, we encourage it! Montessori philosophies easily translate to home life in many facets, and they particularly encourage independence and peace within the home. From dressing themselves and fixing snacks to contributing to household tasks and meals, children desire to be part of your home team naturally. In addition to our staff, who openly offer a wealth of information, these resources can help you find what works best for your family.

TRILLIUMMONTESSORI.ORG
Trillium Montessori is home to the Montessori experiments and collections of AMS-certified Montessori Guide, Seemi Abdullah. Here, parents can find a wealth of resources from blogs and podcasts, to printables and online courses. While Trillium Montessori focuses on a homeschool ideal, we find this site to be a valuable resource for ongoing Montessori engagement for parents, through some of her ideas for home as well as her blogs, podcasts, and newsletters.
IN THE HOME AROUND THE WORLD
HOMESCHOOLING THOUGHTS Just because you carefully curate activities for your Montessori shelves doesn’t mean you can’t also set up some sensory play. And just because you believe in the value of open-ended play doesn’t mean you can’t use printables.
Listen - there are skills that require explicit teaching. And free play that is not directed by an adult is important for kids for a whole host of reasons. It’s both. And on top of all that, different kids need different things explicitly taught and will gravitate towards different types of free play.
It’s nice to see what other people are up to, but what they do (or don’t do) is not your playbook. Every family is different. So release the guilt :)

This was one of the most popular works on my shelf this month, and for good reason. It works so many skills and sparked so many conversations. My daughter (4.5) wanted to label the parts of the frog again and again! And I was happy because she was getting hands-on experience with a very important nonfiction text feature.
Did you know nonfiction books have different text features than fiction? Things like an index, the table of contents, and diagrams to organize and make sense of information are considered nonfiction text features. Kids need expose to both fiction and nonfiction texts and text features.
Here’s a work that can help you teach a nonfiction text feature in a hands-on way - diagram building! You need a completed control diagram, a blank diagram template with just the picture in the middle, and the list of words to label the picture with. But if you comment the word FROG, I’ll send you the link to this exact projectbasedprimary printable - and it’s free!

Some days, I just can’t put the baby down.
But life doesn’t stop — and neither do they.
With a little prep and a lot of trust,
they make their own meals.
It’s not fancy,
but it’s full of love,
and every step builds their independence.
They’re learning, growing, and showing up —
even when my hands are full

School readiness is about so much more than mastering a few letters. It’s about developing social-emotional skills, self-regulation, language, and cognitive abilities. The National Association for the Education of Young Children emphasizes that these skills are the real indicators of a child’s ability to thrive in school.
Research Shows:
• Up to 65% of children who haven’t mastered name writing still demonstrate strong social and language skills.
• Only about 35% of children who can write their name exhibit complete readiness across cognitive, emotional, and social areas.
So, if your little one isn’t writing their name just yet, rest assured-they’re on the right track in so many other important ways!
At Little Big Learners, we offer 3-hour weekly drop-off School Readiness programs for preschoolers, school holiday workshops, 1:1 tutoring, and online sessions to support your child’s development.
Our programs are designed to nurture confidence, resilience, and curiosity, ensuring children are prepared for school and life.
Join us at Little Big Learners and give your child the best possible start to their educational journey!
